Twilight Years by David Bancroft Just the other day, I was discussing with my youngest son, the Marine, about his leaning towards reenlistment next year instead of resuming his education in the private sector. I even tried the getting married and giving his loving parents a few more grandchildren before he gets too old ploy. And while I did not sway him with this conversation, my own comments about the future triggered thoughts that have been recurring more often ever since my mother just avoided pneumonia earlier this year. It is about the parents of my wife and me being in the twilight of their lives. Knowing they have already lived a good life, including making it through our relatively calm teen years and helping us survive our daughter’s teen years, still does not soften what will inevitably come. I also understand that many reading this private thought have gone through what hopefully became a celebration of one or both parents. At least, that is how I hope both families of my wife and mine react. Yes, grieve for missing them, but being happy in what they gave us . . . and where they are now. I am also sure that depending on age and experiences, there could be significant differences in answering . . . What really are the most important things in your life? Well for me . . . it is my wife, children, grandchildren, and parents.
Moreover, my life and subsequent absolute joys would not exist without my parents. So, being there for them and enjoying their company, even by phone, is what this son will continue to do for as long as time permits! I hope you are as fortunate to do the same even if they are your grandparents or great grandparents. David Bancroft Editor-in-Chief Perspective Archive
