Our Parents - A Reflection by David Bancroft
Regardless of your age, when you think of your mother and father . . . what comes to mind?
Now for those past your teens and any lingering antics that hopefully ended in your early-20's . . . give some thought about the evolution of how you currently view each parent. And please do so even if it involves the sad memory of death, whether recent or many years past.
Of course, this reflection is individually unique that involves so many factors . . . that might have (possibly still do) impacted interpersonal relationships with one or both parents.
Changing course somewhat... I want to focus on those graced with children or plan to have children someday. When did the light bulb come on about dad and/or mom? Are / were you happy with them as grandparents of your children? Do you wonder how they made it through your and/or one of your sibling's teen years? Do you smile to yourself . . . when realizing you just did something that irritated you as a child when done by mom or dad? Do you hope your child will one day see the why and love behind what you did when they wanted you to do otherwise?
Hmmm . . . I wonder if my children will smile when reading these questions, especially the last one. (Two of them are parents with little ones from one to nine years old.)
Regretfully, there are also those with one or both parents, who for various reasons are just not worth the reflection process. (You can use your own imagination here.) It can also be said that the problem(s) could be due to the child, making an honest reflection of parents . . . difficult at best.
Hopefully, most of you will conclude how blessed you have been to have loving and caring parents like my wife and me, which in my opinion . . . can only be fully appreciated from the perspective of an adult with parenting experience. David Bancroft Editor-in-Chief Perspective Archive
