Remembering Memorial Day by David Bancroft Here is a simple question to my fellow Americans… Did you give any thought about the purpose of Memorial Day that we just celebrated on May 30th? I suspect it might have slipped by many of you for well-intended reasons. Still, there is really no excuse for any American to give pause for a short time to remember the why for Memorial Day . . . regardless of where one might be and is doing. Flying Old Glory is a very good way to show it too! How can any of us willingly ignore the brave women and men who paid the ultimate price serving our country proudly in the armed forces and helping to sustain what the USA is all about? And it is our responsibility to make sure that our children and grandchildren know about the “real” importance of Memorial Day. Just think about these fallen heroes from an age perspective with the vast majority being oh so young. Many never saw 19, 20, or 21 with most others never seeing 25 or 30. (My mother lost her twin brother in Normandy during World War II when they were only 19 years old.) So, when you hear about a fallen like 22 year-old Marine Corporal Jason Dunham, who has been nominated for the Medal of Honor . . . it should be a somber reminder about all those he has joined in one of our country’s most sacred clubs. Then think about the loved ones left behind, who prayed and worried endlessly for their special one in harms way. I still think about the period when my youngest son was serving with the Marines in Iraq during 2003 . . . My biggest fear was him becoming a fallen hero. Yes, a father’s tremendous pride for him serving would remain, but my anguish over his loss would have always been. That is why remembering the fallen heroes on Memorial Day and honoring our veterans on Veterans’ Day will never diminish for this American. Nor is it a question of whether one has served, but respecting and appreciating all those who have. Blood and lives were shed for our country’s independence and has been necessary to do so in sustaining our freedom and way of life. Furthermore, it is never too late to remember and honor our fallen heroes! I invite you to read my poems, Honoring The Fallen and Country's Sake, which hopefully will come to mind upon hearing of another fallen hero.David Bancroft Editor-in-Chief Perspective Archive
