The Olympics and A Hope by David Bancroft It seems that during every Olympics since I can remember as an adult, I find myself hoping for the same thing . . . that one day many of these great athletes will find themselves in a significant leadership position of their respective countries.
This idealism is centered on these fine young men and women coming together in competitive pursuit of being the best at their sport every four years in the winter and summer Olympics . . . and doing so with respect for each other.
Sadly, it is an "unrealistic hope" for this feeling of goodwill to other country's athletes actually being spread by the respective athletes through their future endeavors . . . as most will never aspire to political leadership or achieve the goal if set. And yet, there is nothing wrong in hoping for what might never be.
So for now... I invite you to read my poem, Our Olympians, and replace references to USA and Americans, if it applies. Our Olympians Every four years each one of them strives for Olympic glory. Some in winter, some in summer, and all dedicating their lives for this special time, proudly representing the USA every minute of every day. And while we cheer and honor those who win gold, silver, and bronze... it is all the Olympians now and back then who have earned the praise from their fellow Americans! And I hope for the same during and after . . . the 2008 Summer Olympics in China. David Bancroft Editor-in-Chief Perspective Archive
