Lantana Dominates 2001 AFI Awards Lantana, a tightly plotted suburban drama set in Sydney, has fended off box office hit Moulin Rouge to dominate the 2001 AFI Awards. The movie won the lion's share of the prizes, including best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. Look out for the film in the US - Lions Gate is handling distribution, and it is expected to begin screening around mid-December. Moulin Rouge proved that a healthy budget can impress in other areas, by scooping up the best sound, best costume design, best production design and best cinematography awards. The low-budget La Spagnola, a fiery Spanish comedy-drama, which surprised the organisers by gaining more nominations than any film except Lantana, picked up best original music score. The Bank, a stinging satire and thriller, managed best original screenplay, although it probably deserved better. Anthony LaPaglia is particularly good as the US boss of the bank - he is wickedly smooth, ruthless and totally loathsome. If you love to hate banks, you will find this film immensely satisfying :) Without further ado, here are the film winners.
