| "Little girls and women folk do not perhaps identify with Robin Hood as a hero, so let us try and give them something of interest and joy", said Good Sam to Spook. Spook folded his hands, sat down and began to relive his adventure with Good Sam, as the manly qualities of Robin Hood were conveyed to everyone. These are the words of Good Sam below. | | | | First let me explain that Lady or Maid Marion (or just Marion) came into the ballad and legends of Robin Hood much later than original versions and for a purpose, although she was probably always there among this jolly band of outlaws. Our lady was intended to be the wife of that dirty ole man - The Sheriff of Nottingham, but Robin would have none of that, even though he was pillaging the countryside to take from the rich and give to the poor. So we have in Lady Marion women who are rescued by the man of their dreams and not bad dreams like having to live with a villain of a man.
Of course we men know that there have always been and will always be women warriors, equal to or greater in strength and character than most men, so please look for and read versions of the legend of Robin Hood which include Marion in this most excellent character, for those versions are true.
Now the other characters which are most common in the Robin Hood legends and ballads could be examined, but we shall leave them to your reading and enjoyment as you too begin or continue an adventuresome journey into our NetNacs! Site of the Month, which by the way was among the most popular suggested web sites by our AS! Membership.
"I sure do love to sit down with a spot of tea and hear Good Sam tell stories", said Spook. Do you agree? |
